Housing Affordability

We are ensuring that more Australians can buy a home. Our government is prioritising affordable housing for the Australians who need it.

We have committed to building 1.2 billion homes nationwide because more homes mean more affordable housing.

We’ve expanded the Home Guarantee Scheme, helping over 200,000 home buyers into homes sooner with smaller deposits. This scheme allows first-home buyers earning under $125,000 or with a joint income of $200,000 to purchase a house with a 5% deposit.

We’ve passed Help to Buy laws, delivering lower deposits and smaller mortgages for thousands of first-time homebuyers.

We’re helping those with student debt by making it easier for them to buy a home by changing how HECS-HELP debts are evaluated by financial institutions when applying for a mortgage.

Cracking down on foreign investors by banning the purchase of established homes

We’re protecting renters with longer leases, stronger protections and the power to make your place your own through ‘A Better Deal for Renters’, an agreement by the National Cabinet to develop a nationally consistent policy to protect renters.

There is no silver bullet to fix the housing affordability problem in Australia, but by planning for the future, the Albanese Labor Government is helping Australians realise their dream.
